Classifications of ultrasound machines available.

Ultrasound machines can either be portable ultrasound, Point of Care Ultrasound or tower ultrasound machines. The size of the ultrasound machine has little to do with functions. Some small size portable ultrasound machines have more powerful functions than full tower ultrasound machines.

  1. Portable Ultrasound Machines: Small size (like a laptop) and easy for clinicians to carry around with them. Portable ultrasound machines should not be confused with Point of Care Ultrasound Machines.
  2. Point of Care Ultrasound Machines: These are small handheld devices a clinician can put in the pocket during clinical rounds and be able to do imaging at the bedside.
  3. Tower Ultrasound Machines: These are the commonest and have the most functions. They have multiple functions and networking functions other types do not have.
